JEAN BOWEN

Administration, University of Colorado Boulder, Institute of Cognitive Science

Chef and Owner, Cuisine by Jean

Dedicated member of the Share Our Strength Colorado Leadership Council since 2008.

Food is...”Joy”

In 2007, Jean was inducted into the Cooking Matters Colorado Hall of Fame, an honor recognizing volunteers who have dedicated their time and talent to fifteen or more classes. Since then, Jean has continued to actively contribute her culinary skills as a volunteer chef instructor for the Cooking Matters classes. Jean chaired the Colorado Share Our Strength Leadership Council from 2014 to 2016, also serving on the Communications and Board Development committees. In 2017, Jean will assume a new role as an ambassador – engaging past leadership council members in opportunities to advance the mission of Share Our Strength Colorado. Jean asserts that “Cooking Matters is an organization that is very efficient and successful at reaching out to families and children, equipping them with lifelong skills to cook and eat in a healthy way.”

Jean contributes her expertise in project planning, finance, teaching and coaching to her professional and volunteering roles. Receiving a Master of Education from Capella University, Jean also attended the Art Institute of Colorado, completing a Bachelor of Culinary Management.  As a small business owner, Cuisine by Jean Catering is a personal chef/catering business that prepares meals for individuals, families and special events in Colorado and Washington state. Jean also serves on the Board of Directors for the Boulder-based Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, a human rights organization dedicated to ending violence against adults, youth and children.

Leisure time for Jean is spent in the kitchen, preparing too many of her favorite recipes to mention just one. As an avid reader, Jean enjoys a great book and spending time with her three beautiful granddaughters. Over the course of 16 years of volunteer service, Jean is most proud that she has played a significant role to advance the mission of No Kid Hungry – “we live in a nation where there is just no excuse for children to be hungry – I am glad to be part of the solution.”
