King Soopers Awards Cooking Matters Colorado $15,000 to Increase Food Security

DENVER, CO – (Feb. 2019) King Soopers, City Market, and Cooking Matters Colorado (CMCO) will collaborate on their shared missions to end hunger in the communities they serve with the help of a $15,000 grant. CMCO is helping to end childhood hunger by providing food skills education to parents, family members, and caregivers who affect the eating habits of low-income children, inside the home and out. CMCO began offering its 6-week Cooking Matters courses nearly 25 years ago. Since that time, CMCO has provided direct education in the form of courses and tours to over 120,000 food-insecure families across 55 counties.

The grant through the King Soopers Fund’s focus area of Hunger Relief will support CMCO’s Community Engagement efforts, which are critical to promoting CMCO courses and tours within the community and enrolling participants. Funding will:

  • Help CMCO recruit and train volunteers and hold annual trainings, and
  • Support materials and training costs associated with community engagement in CMCO’s efforts to alleviate hunger for over 10,000 low-income families

In 2017, more than 1,400 of 5,000 CMCO retail tour participants learned how to shop healthy on a budget at King Soopers locations; CMCO invested $14,000 in gift cards so that tour attendees could practice buying nutritious food to feed a family of four on $10/day. Together with the store, CMCO plans to reach even more people in additional King Soopers locations.

Zero Hunger | Zero Waste is King Soopers and City Markets bold and ambitious plan designed to end hunger in its communities and eliminate waste across the company by 2025. “We are grateful to partner with Cooking Matters and the education they bring to the communities we call home”, said Adam Williamson, Spokesperson for King Soopers and City Market.
